Addu Atoll UPSC Topic – What is It?

Addu Atoll, commonly known as Seenu Atoll, is the Maldives’ southernmost atoll. The Maldives are extended into the Southern Hemisphere by Addu Atoll and Fuvahmulah, which is 40 kilometres north of Addu Atoll. Malé, the country’s capital, lies 540 kilometres south of Addu Atoll. Addu City, one of the Maldives’ three cities, is administratively located in Addu Atoll. The inhabited sections of Addu Atoll include Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, Maradhoo, Feydhoo, and Hithadhoo, as well as the natural islands of Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, Maradhoo, Feydhoo, and Hithadhoo. Addu City’s districts are not divided by the natural islands that make up the city. In addition to the territories that make up Addu City, the Atoll of Addu has a number of additional populated and deserted islands, notably Gan Island, which is home to Gan International Airport.

Geography of Addu Atoll – Important for UPSC

Addu Atoll, unlike other Maldivian atolls, features a lagoon that serves as a natural harbour and is accessible by four natural channels. This creates a natural port that is always tranquil and safe for marine boats, and is unaffected by seasonal variations. The Kuda channel and the neighbouring Maa channel are on the north, the Gan channel is on the south, and the vast Villingili canal is on the southeast of the atoll.

Barrier reefs defend the islands from the Indian Ocean’s storms and heavy seas. On the islands, coconut palms, the national tree, may grow practically everywhere. It is known for its tiny lakes, marshes, and swampy taro farms.

History of Addu Atoll – Important for UPSC

During WWII, it was home to a secret Royal Navy facility known as HMS Haitan, which took advantage of the deep anchorage and protected natural harbour. Oil tanks and storage facilities, as well as an airfield and a flying boat station, were developed on Gan Island. Throughout the early years of the conflict, the Axis had no knowledge of the facility. After being handed to the Royal Air Force as RAF Gan in 1957, the facility was decommissioned in 1975. Gan International Airport is presently located on the island.

Biology of Addu Atoll – Important for UPSC

The cosmopolitan white tern (“dhondheeni”) is exclusively found on Addu Atoll in the Maldives and is considered an emblem of the islands. It is also home to a diverse whale and dolphin population. There is a wide variety of species found there. The only part of the Maldives not damaged by the worldwide coral bleaching in 1998 is Addu Atoll. The southern Maldives were spared by El Nio’s “too warm” main ocean currents. The corals begin at the tops of giris and thilas (approximately 1 metre [3 ft] below the surface) and descend with the reef to a depth of 30 metres (98 ft) or more.

Linguistics

The dialect spoken is known as “Addu bas,” and though it is close to Fuvahmulah’s “Mulaku bas,” it is distinct from the official version of the Dhivehi language. Addu bas was formerly extensively spoken by the educated masses of three separate atolls in the south, who embraced it as their common tongue. It is also said to be the most well-known and widely spoken dialect in the Republic of Maldives. Nevertheless, when Addu proclaimed independence and established the United Suvadive Republic, official communications was written in Malé rather than Addu bas. Despite the linguistic differences, the written form is widely used across the Maldives.

Culture

Long ago, Addu City was dominated by families nominated by the sultans in Malé, and it may have had a matrilineal succession structure; nowadays, it is very much a man’s world. There was a time in Addu history when the status quo shifted for a time, when the community became more matriarchal and females became the breadwinners.
