Joining the Crime Bureau of Investigation, India is a very honourable and tough task to do. A lot of candidates wish to become a CBI investigator and the salary of a CBI officer is high but changes with the post. There are two ways to become a CBI officer.
The first method is not related to UPSC. Candidates that wish to be directly inducted as a part of CBI can write the Staff Selection Commission’s Combined Graduate Level examination and clear it and follow the procedure.
Luckily, if you are an IAS or IPS aspirant, you can become a CBI officer through the UPSC exam. In order for that to happen, you need to become an IPS officer and serve for your cadre and then allocate yourself into CBI probation or you can also apply for the Deputy SP in CBI, which is a group B post. Unfortunately, this option can happen only when there is a vacancy, it is not a yearly recruitment process.

UPSC Syllabus

UPSC Pattern
The UPSC exam is divided into three parts. First, there is a prelims examination round.
There are two papers in this round each of 3 hours and weight-age of 200 marks each. The second paper is the CSAT paper that is basically to test your general knowledge and mental aptitude. If you meet the criteria and pass the exam, then you move onto round 2.
The second round is the mains examination round. There are 9 papers in total. Out of which the first two exams which are based on the language are qualifying. If you qualify, you can further write the 7 papers.
Upon clearing, a personal interview round will be held to see if you are fit to become an IAS officer or not.
UPSC Mains
The UPSC mains has 9 papers with each having a total of 250 marks. The first two as stated above are qualifying exams and the remaining 7 are:
- Essay based on aspirants choice
- General Studies 1 (Indian heritage & culture, history & geography of the world & society)
- General studies-2 (governance, constitution, polity, social justice & international relations)
- General studies-3 (technology, economic development, biodiversity, security & disaster management)
- General studies-4 (ethics, integrity and aptitude)
- Optional subject 1
- Optional subject 2
Studying for the mains exam is very difficult if not managed well. So be ready to take on a huge workload before you decide to write.
Tips for Preparation
Even though the UPSC exam is the toughest or one of the toughest exams in India, it does not mean it cannot be conquered. It has been done and people will continue to do it.
With that in mind, a few tips that are suggested for better preparation are given below:
- Create a time table
- Prepare every day. Consistent practice is necessary. Remember, Rome was not built in one day
- Eat healthy and work out regularly for a stress-free mind.
- Read the newspapers every day
