The IPS (Indian Police Service), along with the IAS (Indian Administrative Service) and the IFS (Indian Forest Service) comprises the All India Service. After India got independence from the British rule, the IPS was formed in 1948 to replace the Indian Imperial Police. The salary of an IPS Officer can range from INR 15,600 to INR 80,000 depending on the rank and positions.

Duties of the IPS Officers

The IPS works towards protecting the lives of the citizens and ensuring they follow law and order. They can be allotted as chief officers to the state and central police forces, Central Armed Police forces (such as BSF, CRPF, SSB, CISF, ITBP), National Security Guards (NSG), National Investigative Agency (NIA), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Intelligence Bureau (IB), Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and other posts based on the government’s requirements.

Several IPS Officers have been awarded medals such as the Ashok Chakra and Kirti Chakra for their contribution to the society, even if the duties were not listed for their ranks.

The major duties of an IPS Officer can be as follows-

  • Maintenance of public peace and order, crime prevention, investigation and detection,VIP security, counter-terrorism, tackling smuggling, railway policing, drug trafficking, disaster management, border policing, protection of the economic laws, etc.

  • Leading and commanding the Central Armed Forces.

  • Leading and commanding the Indian Intelligence Agencies.

What are the Qualifications needed for IPS?

To qualify for the All India Service, one has to appear for the UPSC Civil Services exam. Depending on the merit and the choice of service, the candidates are further selected for their training and assigned ranks. The training period for IPS takes up to 3 years and the officers are paid during this time based on their ranks. Some of the basic requirements to become an IPS are-

  • The candidate must be a citizen of India
  • The candidate must be at least 21 years old
  • The candidate must be graduate from a UGC recognised institution
  • The candidate must have appeared for the UPSC CSE and passed the exam

What is the Retirement Age for the People in IPS?

The retirement age of Civil Servants can range from 50-55 years. Their term is for 30 years and their retirement depends upon whichever takes place earlier. For officials who have engaged in unlawful or corrupt activities, their names would be forwarded to a Review and Representation Committee who would then take the case for review for early retirement.

What Degree is Best for IPS?

There are no compulsory subjects or degrees that one needs to appear for the Civil Services. The only criteria for eligibility for the exam is that one can be a graduate from any stream or discipline, but their degree should have been pursued in a UGC recognised institute. However, the most important subjects in the exam include history, economics, polity, geography, public relations, and environmental science. If one chooses to graduate in any of these subjects, they can get to have an in-depth study on the subjects that could be useful for the exam.

It should be kept in mind that being thorough with one subject will not guarantee success in the exam. People from other streams such as Engineering, Commerce, and Science have an equal chance in clearing the exam.
