What is LBSNAA?

LBSNAA’s full form is Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. It is a training and research institute made exclusively to train civil service officers of the Indian Administrative Service as well as Group-A Central Services loathed in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. The institute comes under the Department of Personnel & Training, Government of India.

LBSNAA History

LBSNAA was founded in 1959 which was announced by the Union Home Minister Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant. It is located at Mussoorie’s Charleville Estate. As it was on a hill station there were many problems faced initially during the setup of the academy but with a lot of the efforts, it got finally completed within two months of its establishment.

Before LBSNAA the campus area was a hotel called “The Charleville Hotel” which was founded in 1854 by General Wilkinson. The hotel was later purchased by Mr Hobson in 1861 who was the retired manager of Mussoorie Bank.

The grounds of Happy valley belonged to a brewer V.A. Mackinnon who in 1904 then started a Happy Valley club with tennis courts and Gymkhana. The Gymkhana was named “Pagal Gymkhana” that was set up on a Polo field. The last record of a ‘Pagal Gymkhana’ dates back to 19th June 1943, to raise funds for the Red Cross during World War II.

In 1984 a fire destroyed the main building of the erstwhile Charleville complex which was restored again with new additional features.

How to go to LBSNAA?

If you want to be part of LBSNAA then you will have to crack the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE). The examination consists of three phases. These three phases are:

  1. Preliminary examination
  2. Mains examination
  3. Personality test

A candidate will have to secure minimum qualifying marks to advance in further rounds. The Preliminary exam consists of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and the mains examination consists of descriptive type questions.

After clearing all these rounds, a candidate should be selected as an Indian Administrative officer or any Group-B officer to go to LBSNAA.

LBSNAA IAS Training

Now you have an idea about the history of LBSNAA and also how to go to LBSNAA you must be wondering, “how many days training for IAS in LBSNAA?” For IAS officers it is 26 weeks.

A normal day at LBSNAA starts at 6 in the morning. The trainee officers are gathered at the Polo ground for morning exercise which is of about 60 minutes. After which the officers are given about half an hour to get ready for the morning sessions which starts at 9:30 a.m.

There are about five to six sessions in the morning before lunchtime. The timing varies from course to course. The course covers social, economic, political importance like History, Political Science, Economics, Law, ICT, Public Administration, and Management & Behavioural Science.

The evening hours are for extracurricular activities such as sports, riding etc. Some cultural activities are also held occasionally before dinner.

Socialising and Extra-Curricular Activities During LBSNAA Training

After dinner, the officers interact with each other, review the learnings of the day and then do the preparation for the next day. Extra-curricular activities like short treks, community services, adventure sports like rock climbing, paragliding, river rafting, etc are usually organized on holidays and weekends. Apart from this, there is also a complete horse riding infrastructure.

There is a special Induction Level Training Curriculum. Officers are sent on treks in and around Mussoorie and also on the Greater Himalayas where they learn to live in the extreme conditions. Trainee Officers are encouraged to take up extra-curriculum modules and develop onto their hobby of choice.

For this, there are several clubs and societies for them to grow their creative side. The clubs are:

  2. Alumni Association
  3. Computer Society
  4. Film Society
  5. Fine Arts Association
  6. Hobbies Club
  7. House Journal Society
  8. Management Circle
  9. Nature Lovers’ Club
  10. Officers’ Club
  11. Officers’ Mess
  12. Rifle & Archery Club
  13. Society for Contemporary Affairs
  14. Society for Social Service
