LBSNAA came into being on 15th April 1958, founded by Govind Ballabh Pant to impart training for aspiring civil service candidates. The full-form of LBSNAA is Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, and it is considered a coveted institute in India. Located in Mussoorie, the institute provides training to civil servants with Group-A central civil servants. The institute also provides training for other government and public administration services with a short-term training program.
After qualifying for the IAS exam, the civil servant aspirants go for an IAS training period in LBSNAA, where they train for facing practical challenges awaiting them in their service life.

All IAS officers are excited to begin their LBSNAA journey before they become official civil servants. However, it is not an easy ride. All the principal Indian Civil Service exam officers have their initial training before branching out to the respective staff colleges. These officers are oriented towards their responsibilities and to fulfil their duties towards the government and the people.
First Week of the Training
The first week of IAS training at LBSNAA is not that hectic as it focuses on ice-breaking sessions. The academic courses are restricted to specific hours during the first week of the training. The ice-breaking sessions help recruits with team building and orientation programs. It is only after the initial week that candidates go through some reality checks. The training begins with waking up at 5: 30 in the morning and walking for 1.5 km. Then begins the PT session for 1 hour, where light exercise is done by recruits such as running for a km.
The most challenging part of LBSNAA is that the IAS trainee needs to be top-notch at the academic front by submitting the assignments, book reviews, essays, and acing midterm examinations besides excelling the physical training. After the exam, a village visit takes place around the campus, situated around 10 km from it. The real-life experience of the village visit aids the officers to understand the real-life problems of villagers daily.
Weekend Days
Apart from the assignment, training on weekends is the most challenging part of the LBSNAA journey. On Saturdays, trekking for all the officers involves walking and climbing around 22 km from morning to afternoon.
However, other co-curricular activities are also conducted during the training period like riding horses, firing guns, cooking, baking, river rafting, bungee jumping, etc. All these activities are performed after the routine academic and physical activities. The officers who have completed their induction training have to join their respective deputations. They have to work under Joint secretaries on deputation for a few months.
Winter Study Tour
During the training for academic purposes, they have also been given the task of the winter study tour. This tour involves a Tour of India to experience the culture, diversity and heritage of the country. These probationers are divided into small groups and have to work under different departments. The recruits also go on a tour of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
However, all the amenities are given in the centre, but the hectic real-life experience during training is full of excitement and enthusiasm. To make life at LBSNAA even more enthusiastic, probationers are encouraged to join various clubs and societies. The 100-day program of foundation course focuses on the disillusionment of the trainees about events happening around the world and how to tackle such events tactfully as an officer.
On-Field Learning Opportunities
The experience of successful IAS candidates at training centres at LBSNAA is an enriching one. This training provides on-field learning opportunities to the IAS probationers. Apart from academic sessions conducted at the LBSNAA, they prepare the probationers for real-life challenges ahead. There are exams and marks during the training as well, and the probationers have to follow the Probation Rules. They are motivated to focus on co-curricular and extracurricular activities that equip them to balance work with overall personality development.
