The Union Public Service Commission provides various facilities to aspirants who are differently abled in the form of age limit relaxations, reservation of certain posts and special provisions for exam centers. However, differently abled people cannot apply to all of the services in the Civil Services. Let us see what posts are available for such candidates and what the criteria are to avail the benefits under Physically Handicapped category in UPSC.

Physically Handicapped Category

The commission assigns a UPSC category code for different disabilities. The following table lists the various codes that UPSC assigns for different categories of physical handicaps (PH) or disability eligible for the IAS exam:

KC Kneeling and Crouching BL Both Legs
SE Seeing VH Visually Handicapped
RW Reading and Writing LV Low Vision
B Blind
H Hearing/Speaking HH Hearing Handicapped
C Communication PD Partially Deaf
FD Fully Deaf

The presence of any one or more of the above-mentioned conditions is defined as disability by the UPSC. The commission updates this list based on advancements in medical technology and new categories may be added in the future. Aspirants should check the latest IAS notification for the same
