A contractor hires Amitabh Arora to complete the job, and Amitabh estimates that the job will take 25 days to complete. After Amitabh worked for 5 days, Bindu Singh finished it in 20 days. In how many days will Amitabh and Bindu finish the job together?

Answer: Amitabh can do a piece of job in 25 days.

In 5 days he can do 1/5th of the task.

Rest work = 1 – ⅕= ⅘

Bindu can complete 4/5th of the job in 20 days so he can do the complete work in 25 days.

Amitabh’s 1 day job = 1/25

Bindu’s 1 day job= 1/25

(Amitabh and Bindu)’s 1 day job = 1/25+1/25 = 2/25

Bindu and Amitabh jointly can finish the work in = 25/2 days

Question and Answer 2

Bhanu is one-third the speed of Arnab, and Arnab is twice the speed of Chandu. How long will it take Arnab, Bhanu, and Chandu to complete the work if they work together for 7200 hours?

Answer: Let’s Chandu do the job in 2x.

Bhanu can do it in 6x and Arnab can do it in 3x.

1/2x + 1/3x + 1/3x= 1/30

3+1+2/6x = 1/30

x=30

So, the time taken to finish the work by Bhanu, Arnab, and Chandu is 180, 90, 60 days respectively.

Vijay can complete a project in just 24 days. Rakesh can complete the task in 30 days, while Vinod can complete it in 40 days. Vijay and Vinod worked on it for four days before handing it over to Rakesh. Rakesh worked for a few days before handing it over to Vijay and Vinod to finish the job. Rakesh worked for how many days?

Answer: Combined work done by Vijay and Vinod in  4 + 6 days (4 initial days and last 6 days

10/24+10/40 = ⅔

Remaining work= 1-⅔= ⅓

Rakesh works for (1/3× 30)= 10 days

What is the efficiency ratio of men and women if three men and two women can do the same amount of work as two men and three women?

Answer: Work done by (3 M + 2 W) = Work done by (2 M + 3 W)

⇒ 1 M = 1 W

⇒ W:M= 1 : 1

A can complete a task in 120 hours, while B needs 96 hours to complete the same task. How many hours will it take for both of them to finish the work if the work is increased by 8 times if they work together?

Answer: Let the total job be 100%

A can do the job in 120 hours, so he can do 20% job in 24 hours

B can do the job in 96 hours, so he can do 25% job in 24 hours

Together they can do 20+25 = 45% job in 24 hours

Now the work is increased by 800%, so the job becomes 900%

The job can be done in 900/45= 480 hours

Masons’ hourly wages have risen by a quarter of a percent. The number of hours he works per day has decreased by 16 percent since the raise. How much (in Rs.) does he earn now if he was earning Rs. 120 per day before the increase?

Answer: Daily wages = hourly wages × job hours.

Let the initial hourly wages and job hours be Rs. x and y hours respectively.

Since he used to earn Rs. 120 earlier, xy = 120

New hourly wages = Rs. (1.25x) and recent functioning hours = 0.84y

∴ New everyday earnings = (0.84y)(1.25x) = 1.05xy = 120*1.05 = Rs. 126

Radhe completes 70% of a project in 15 days. She later completes the remaining work in four days with Shyam’s assistance. How long will it take Shyam to finish the job on his own?

Answer: Let total work = 150 units

Since Radhe does 70% of the work (i.e. 105 units) in 15 days,

Radhe will have 105/15 = 7 units per day

Job left = 150-105 = 45 units

Let Shyam do y units of work per day. Radhe and Shyam complete the pending work in 4 days.

∴   4(y + 7) = 45

∴   4y = 45 − 28 = 17 i.e. x = 4.25 units

∴   Time taken by Shyam to finish the job = 150/4.25 = 35.29 ≈ 35.3 days

A and B are working on a project worth Rs 54000. In ten days, A can complete the task by himself. They collaborate for three days. B works alone for 3 days after 3 days, and A finishes the remaining work in 3 days. What is the earnings percentage of B?

Answer: A can do 10% work in a day. A has worked 6 days in total. And so has B

A completed 60% job in 6 days and B did 40% in 6 days.

Efficiency of B and A= 4: 6

B’s share = 4/10× 54000 = 21600
