What is LBSNAA?
LBSNAA is an IAS training institute where IAS aspirants pass the examination and get the ranking. LBSNAA training period is for 4 months where all trainees are exposed to the sense of “equality.” After the LBSNAA training, IAS officers continue their training in the same academy while others for IPS and other positions move to their respective institutes for further training. This is the answer to the query that many IAS aspirants have “How to go LBSNAA?”
How the Day Starts?
A typical day starts at 6 am. Officer Trainees gather at the Polo Ground for morning exercise, which usually lasts for 60 minutes. The riding schedule goes on simultaneously. Depending on the batch size, it also takes place at other times during the day. The Officer Trainees then have about an hour and a half to get ready, have breakfast, and report for classroom sessions, which begin at about 9:30 am.

From Morning till Dinner Time
There are 5-6 academic sessions of 55 minutes each on weekdays as per structured session plans. The duration usually varies from course to course. Curricular Inputs are given in various subjects of social, economic, political importance like History, Political Science, Economics, Law, ICT, Public Administration, and Management & Behavioural Science. Evening hours are usually left for the extra-curricular module, sports, riding, etc. Occasional cultural programs are also scheduled in the evening before dinner.
Socialising and Extra-Curricular Activities
The Officer Trainees mostly interact with each other, review the day’s learning and prepare for the sessions of the next day after dinner. Extra-curricular activities like short treks, community services, adventure sports like rock climbing, para-gliding, river rafting, etc. are usually organized on holidays and weekends. A course normally demands around 8-10 hours of activity per day, which sums to about 60 hours of academic and other engagements per week.
Officers under training are encouraged to lead a rich, varied, and vibrant campus life extending beyond the confines of lecture halls. At the Academy, outdoor events play important parts in the dynamic training curriculum. The Happy Valley Sports Complex has been expanded to meet the growing physical training needs of the times. It has a state-of-the-art gymnasium, badminton, squash, and lawn tennis courts.
Activities under Training
There are cycling paths, football, and hockey grounds, to help officers under training to improve their proficiency in sports and games. A swimming pool is currently under construction and is expected to be operational soon. The Academy also has a complete horse-riding infrastructure. The horse-riding instructors are brought from the President’s Body Guards. The horse riding establishment has been shifted from March 2017 to its new location in the Polo Ground.The Induction Level Training Curriculum
For the induction level training curriculum, Officer Trainees are sent on treks in and around Mussourie and to the Greater Himalayas. There they learn to cope with conditions of adversity, bad weather, insufficient accommodation, and limited access to food. Visits and stays in backward villages help them to understand and appreciate the realities of rural life. Officer Trainees are encouraged to take up extra-curricular modules and cultivate in-depth interest and proficiency in any hobby of their choice. To achieve this, they are encouraged to participate in the activities of various clubs and societies in order to express their creative potential. Courses offered at the LBSNAA
1. Foundation Course
This course is for the new recruits of the All India Services and Central Services (Group A). It is about imparting the necessary skills, knowledge, and attitude to become successful civil servants. According to the official website of the Academy, the chief objectives of this course are:
To foster greater cooperation and coordination among various public services by building an esprit de corps; and to promote all-round development of the personality of an officer trainee- intellectual, moral, physical, and aesthetic.
2.IAS Professional Courses
These include phase I and phase II training. The coveted all-India tour is included in this course. For this, the Officer Trainees go for a week-long attachment with the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies in which they get to learn how the Indian Parliamentary system works. They also get to visit the President of India, the Vice-President of India, the Prime Minister of India, and other dignitaries during this period. Subjects taught here are:
- IAS in perspective/Role of the IAS in policy-making National Security/ Law and order.
- Agriculture /Land Management and Administration Rural Development /Decentralization and Panchayati Raj.
- Urban management/Infrastructure and Public-Private Partnership.
- E-Governance/Office Management/Administrative Skills Soft skills (Leadership, Organisational Behaviour, Inter-personal skills) Projects Management.
- Engineering Skills and ICIT Financial management and project Appraisal Social Sector/Weaker Section & Minorities.
They also undergo field training in this course.
3. Induction Training Program
This is aimed at officers promoted to the IAS from the state civil services.
4. Mid-Career Training Program
This program is for in-service IAS officers to equip them for higher-level responsibilities. It was started in 2007. This is given in three phases depending on the number of years completed by the IAS officer.
