Pangolins Pangolin is the only scaly mammal on the planet. Pangolins have large, overlapping scales on such body, which act as an armour. It can also curl itself into a ball as, self-defence against the predators. Pangolin is an insectivore, feeding on ants and termites, digging them out of mounds and logs using its long claws. It is nocturnal and rests in deep burrows during the day. According to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), it is also the most illegally traded vertebrate within its class (Mammalia). There are eight species and they are only found in Africa and Asia, of which two are known from India, namely the Indian Pangolin (Maniscrassicaudata) and the Chinese Pangolin (Manis pentadactyla). In India, it is a protected animal under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, meaning that no trade is permitted.
