The idea was first concieved by Mohan Sing in Malaya. Indian Prisoner of War were handed over by Japanese to Mohan Singh who tried to recruit them in Indian National Army. By end of 1942 40000 men expressed thier willingness to join INA. The INA was also seen by many as means of checking the misconduct of the Japanese against Indians in S-E Asia and Bulwark against a future Japanese occupation of India. The Quit India Movement happened after INA formation and gave a fillip to INA as well. Japanese didnt supported INA till independence but attempted to invade India along with INA battalion under the command of Shah Nawaz. This campaign failed and Japanese retreated.
