This year’s AIR 1 attended Delhi’s Sardar Patel Vidyalaya and graduated with honours in history from St Stephen’s College. She enrolled in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) where she thought of appearing for the UPSC exam and joined the university for post-graduation before dropping out to study for the Civil Services Exam, primarily through Jamia Millia Islamia’s free Residential Coaching Academy (RCA). Jamia RCA qualified 23 applicants for the Civil Services test, including the all-India top candidate.

“My strategy was to focus on my notes with emphasis on answer-writing practice for the Mains exam. I was happy with my performance in the exam and was hopeful of a good result but topping the merit list did come as a surprise,” Sharma said, adding that she opted for history as the optional subject in the Mains.

Shruti Sharma comes from the Uttar Pradesh district of Bijnor. She went to Cambridge Primary School in Delhi from kindergarten to fifth grade, and then to Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in Delhi for her secondary schooling.
She has been studying at Delhi University’s St Stephen’s College and is a graduate there. She has an interest in history and has pursued History Honours as a student at the time of her graduation. After her graduation, she didn’t let her interest die and pursued a Master’s degree in Modern History at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
In the interim, she enrolled in Jamia Millia Islamia’s residential UPSC Preparation Coaching Academy. This is where she gained the motivation she needed to prepare for the UPSC CSE exam.

“You should do what you like. That will give you the required motivation in this journey.” Sharma said. As an applicant, Shruti had a unique experience. She has been preparing for this event for four years. Shruti had always aspired and has been inspired to work as an IAS official. She started with the fundamentals of current affairs and basics, however. She began her achieving her dream by starting with studying the NCERTs. For preparation, she solely relied on newspapers and her notes.
Shruti, on the other hand, failed her first UPSC attempt. When asked she said, “This is my second attempt. Due to some issues with the medium of instruction, I had to take my Mains examination in Hindi. I missed my interview call by one mark.” She was inspired to work even harder the next time after missing her interview by one mark. Shruti learned from her mistakes and improved in her second attempt, achieving AIR 1 in CSE 2021.

Shruti Sharma, the UPSC CSE 2021 top scorer, received 1105 points out of a possible 2025. She received 932 points in the UPSC civil services written test and 173 points in the interview.
