Shivani Gupta cleared the UPSC Civil Service Examination in 2017 with an All India Rank of 121. Shivani Gupta completed her schooling and higher education from Kurukshetra, Haryana. She cleared her CA IPCC in 2012 and then moved to Delhi to prepare for her CA final exams. She cleared her CA final exams in 2015 and joined Trident Group in Ludhiana and has been associated with them ever since.
Shivani Gupta’s IFS dream came true when she cleared the UPSC Civil Service Exams in 2017 in her first attempt. Her optional subject was Commerce and Accountancy. Shivani Gupta was then allotted the Indian Foreign Service.

IFS Shivani Gupta Prelims Preparation Strategy
Shivani dedicated three months which is March to June, just to prelims. She did not make any notes from any standard books, instead underlined the important topics mentioned in them. She read The Hindu daily and attempted maximum questions before the final exam.
She believes that an individual must attempt as many mock tests as possible. By attempting mock tests you can guess the answers on the final test day. She used to analyze her paper by making bullet points on word documents which included information about the mistakes she made.
She also made separate notes on certain topics such as World Heritage Sites, mnemonics of constitutional articles, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, committees formed for different purposes, and various reports released by domestic and international institutions. She also made a time table and stuck to it diligently.
IFS Shivani Gupta Mains Preparation Strategy
She started her mains preparation once she had cleared her UPSC prelims. She did not have much idea regarding how to prepare for the mains exam. She divided her day into three parts.
She gave 4 – 5 hours to answer writing practice and newspaper reading. When she started writing her answers she used to take 20 – 25 minutes to write an answer. By the time the exam approached the time reduced to 6 – 7 minutes by practising daily. Speed writing is important if you want to do well in the information, so focussing on this aspect will help you score well in the exam.
She gave 6-7 hours daily to her GS subjects preparation. She attempted just one mock test series and was extremely disciplined about it. She gave around 20 mock tests before the examinations. She used to attempt the tests in a closed room with a three-hour time limit to generate a test-like environment. This exercise helped her tackle the exam pressure and it never felt like she was attempting the exam for the first time. She recommends that your answer should contain facts, data, diagrams, and maps.

IFS Shivani Gupta Optional Strategy
Shivani’s optional subject was Commerce and Accountancy. The first part was practical in nature. It consists of Accountancy, Cost Management, Taxation, Auditing, Financial Management. The syllabus was the same as the CA – IPCC level. She recommends that you should practice as much as you can. The theory in the first paper is generally repetitive in nature and one must go through the previous year papers to score well in the exam.
The subjects are theoretical in nature and were namely Human Resource, Organisation Theory, Organisation Behaviour, and Industrial Relations. She referred to Ranker IAS notes.
