Abhay Kumar Biography: Life as a Diplomat

Being an Indian Foreign Service Officer,  Kumar worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) of the Government of India, as well as in the Indian missions and posts overseas in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Kathmandu.  In 2010, he worked as Under Secretary of Digital diplomacy at the MEA headquarters in New Delhi. From 2012 to 2015, he acted as the representative for the Embassy of India, Kathmandu. In March 2015, he was appointed Director of the Nehru Centre, London.

Later on, he was selected as Deputy High Commissioner of India in August 2015. Presently he serves as Deputy Chief of Mission for India at the Indian Embassy in Brazil. He also was appointed India’s next ambassador to Madagascar at the age of 38 which makes him the youngest person ever to become an ambassador. He suggested that the International Day of Diplomats be observed on the United Nations Day which was celebrated for the first time in Brazil in 2017 with an overwhelming response from diplomats around the world.

He does not talk about his experiences as a diplomat; instead, he sheds light on his poet career and the accomplishments in his career so far.

Talks about the Success He’s Witnessed

His greatest achievement has been to find strength and inspiration to keep writing new poems and to be able to do so with a very demanding job as an Indian diplomat. Besides, he’s been fortunate enough to find publishers for the books that he has published so far. His publishers have never complained about it. They were able to sell books, some of them including The Seduction of Delhi and 100 Great Indian Poems becoming bestsellers.

He was honoured to record my poetry in the long-running series ‘The Poets and the Poems’ at the Library of Congress in Washington DC by Grace Cavalieri in 2018. At that time, he was the first Indian poet to record for this reputed program, and it was such a great privilege for him.

How does Abhay Keep a Balance between both His Jobs?

He began writing in Moscow, first documenting the story of his journey from a humble village in Bihar to the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, and then conveying the sense of awe and wonder that he felt in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia. It became a ritual to read and compose poems.

Not only did he keep his career, but he excelled in it. As we all know he was named as Indian Ambassador to Madagascar in 2018  perhaps one of the youngest Indian Ambassadors in the history of the Indian Foreign Service.

He found the balance between the two of them. He thinks poetry and diplomacy go well together. He has mentioned in-depth the relations between poetry and diplomacy and poet diplomats who have excelled in poetry to the point that 7 of them have earned the Nobel Prize in Literature! How cool is that?

Conclusion

For some of us, doing two jobs is a big no. The art of time management is not present in all of us. There are only a few individuals who can simultaneously handle two jobs as well as gain recognition and excellence in their fields. Abhay Sharma is one such person whose existence proved that if you wish, you can successfully juggle between two jobs. Abhay also believes that miracles are going to happen if you never stop dreaming and keep working hard towards your goal.
