How to become an IPS Officer?

If you want to become an IPS officer then you need to appear in the UPSC CSE exam. You need to crack preliminary, mains and interview of the CSE exam to get selected for the training. 

Indian citizens between the age of 21 to 32 years can apply for the CSE examination. Relaxation in age criteria for the IPS exam is applicable only in some categories. Candidates are allowed to appear for six attempts to pass the Civil Service Examination. Candidates who are in the final year of the course are eligible to appear in the CSE exams. 

Different Stages of IPS Training

Applicants selected for the IPS need to follow a two-year rigorous training process to get acquainted with the responsibilities and duties that come with the post. There are four parts to the probation period for a newly recruited IPS officer.

  1. A 3-month foundation course at LBSNAA, Mussoorie
  2. Phase I IPS officer training at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, which lasts for 11 months. 
  3. District Practical Training at respective cadre, which lasts for 6 months
  4. Phase II training at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, which lasts for 1 month. 

Purpose of District Training

How to Prepare for Indian Police Services?

Pattern of Civil Service Exams

The IPS mains exam consists of 9 papers, out of which 7 are compulsory and 2 are chosen out of the optional subjects. The 7 papers are further divided into 5 papers on General Knowledge and 2 papers on languages (A and B). For paper A, the candidate must choose any one Indian language, and paper B will include questions pertaining to the English language.

The questions for the UPSC mains examination are completely subjective. The marks obtained in the language examinations are not considered while formulating the merit list, as they are qualifying exams.  The General Knowledge papers are of 250 marks each while the language papers are of 300 marks each.

How are the IPS Cadre Allocated?
