IAS Vaishali Singh Biography: Journey to All India Rank 8 as UPSC Topper
UPSC topper Vaishali Singh is now an inspiration for many young aspirants hoping to break into the coveted ranks of IAS officers. Vaishali completed her schooling from Delhi Public School, Faridabad.
She was born and brought up in Faridabad and was a very hard-working student. She secured 95.8% marks in her class tenth Board exams (2009) and 95% marks in her class twelfth Board exams (2011).
She then went on to complete a five-year integrated BA-LLB course from the prestigious National Law University, New Delhi. Vaishali came from a family of lawyers and right from a young age she was very keen on taking up law as her profession.
During her time at NLU, Vaishali was awarded six gold medals and a cash prize. She graduated from university in 2016 with a brilliant 7.58 CGPA out of a possible eight. She secured the overall second rank in her batch.
Professional Career
During her time at university, Vaishali had already started preparing herself for her career in law. Her detailed LinkedIn profile mentions as many as six internships she completed within her five years at NLU.
She interned with Delhi State Legal Services Authority, with Death Penalty Research Project, with Advani & Co., with Luthra and Luthra Law Offices, with Amarchand and Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co. and with S & R Associates.
After completing her education, Vaishali successfully converted her last internship with S & R Associates into a full-fledged job.
She started her professional career in 2016 as an Associate at S & R Associates. But very soon she started preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
Why the Civil Services
At NLU, Vaishali had started working as a volunteer with an organization called IDIA (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access). Her experience there was a major motivating factor for her to choose the path of civil services.
She also felt that her education in law would be useful to her in areas of the UPSC syllabus like Indian Polity, Governance and Ethics, Social Justice, etc.

Preparation for the UPSC Civil Services Exam
Vaishali in her preparation focused on both knowledge and strategy. For the General Studies sections, she focused on NCERT books and limited herself to two or three basic books for each subject.
For current affairs, she read two newspapers daily and also studied year-end compilations of each year’s current affairs and government policies.
For topics which she felt were not adequately covered in her chosen books, she made notes from online sources.
Vaishali had chosen two Law Papers for both her optional papers and for these papers also she focused on a few basic books. For the interview, Vaishali also put special emphasis on the DAF (Detailed Application Form).
Her Marks
Vaishali mostly studied for nine to twelve hours daily, but also made sure to give herself regular breaks.
For her preparation strategy, she thoroughly analyzed the previous years’ question papers and the UPSC syllabus. She also answered a number of mock tests for the prelims as well as the mains exams.
In 2018, she scored a brilliant 1066 marks out of a total of 2025 marks in the Civil Services Main Examination (including the interview). Vaishali Singh’s age in 2018 was only 25.

But 2018 was actually Vaishali’s second attempt at the Civil Services Exam. In her first attempt in 2017, she could not clear the prelims as she had not had enough time to prepare.
But the next year, in 2018, she was disciplined and diligent in her preparation and was rewarded with a top rank.
Hobbies and Interests
Vaishali is a sports-lover; she plays volleyball and loves to watch football and tennis. She also loves travelling and watching movies. Her Instagram account (@_singhvaishali_) is filled with pictures of her trips to beautiful places with her friends and family.
Vaishali has chosen a very high-pressure career path, but she believes that we can only perform at our best when we are happy and healthy. So she always makes sure to give herself breaks and get enough sleep.
Career in the Civil Services
In 2019 she completed her officer training for IAS at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. In May 2019 she was given a posting in Kurukshetra, Haryana as Assistant Commissioner (Under Training).
