UPSC Examination

The Civil Services Examination which is conducted by the UPSC, i.e., the Union Public Services Commission is an examination that is conducted each and every year by the Union Public Services Commission in India.

UPSC is one of the toughest examinations in our country and each year, thousands and even lakhs of aspirants enrol themselves for the UPSC examination but not many get to clear and have to appear again and again in order to crack the examination. But for those, who work hard enough and are lucky enough to clear it in one go, it’s like a dream come true for them as they get to enjoy all the amazing benefits of the different posts that they are allotted and get a chance to serve their nation.

What is the Process of Selection for the UPSC Examination?

In order to prepare for the UPSC examination, one has to work extra hard in order to clear the examination. The overall and complete practice for this exam requires an individual to devote a total time period of two years and in those two years, one cannot even afford to waste even a single day as every moment for this examination is precious.

A candidate has to leave every other thing that they are doing in order to clear this examination, especially if they want to clear it in one single attempt.

According to data that was collected, it was found out that on average, there are almost 9,00,000 to 10,00,000 candidates that come forward to apply for this examination and sit to give this exam.

The results for the same are out in the middle of August whereas the results for the final examination are out in the month of May, a year after you have given the examination.

Different Stages of the Examination

There are two different stages of this examination and these are:

#1. Stage I

The first stage consists of the Preliminary examination. This exam happens in the month of June each year and results for the same are out in the month of August.

#2. Stage II

Stage II of the UPSC examination is also known as the Mains. This stage consists of two parts – one is the written examination and the other is the interview.

The written exam under Stage II – Mains is conducted in the month of October each year and the results for the same are announced in the month of January, next year.

On the other hand, there is also a personality test that is conducted each year which is also known as the interview and this is extremely important under the UPSC examination. It is conducted each year after the Preliminary and Mains in order to check a candidate’s personality and his/her way of speaking, their confidence, etc.

This interview is conducted after the results of the Mains examination is out, i.e., in the month of March and the results for the same are out in the month of May.

After the candidates are selected after clearing all the processes, they are provided to go through a training program through which they are being prepared for the post that they have been assigned.

Eligibility Criteria for the UPSC Examination

There are different eligibility criteria for one to get selected in the UPSC examination and in order to take part in it. These are:

#1. Nationality

In order for one to be a part of the UPSC examination and be another IAS or IPS officer, one has to be a citizen of India.

#a. A candidate must be a citizen of India.

#b. He/she must be a citizen of Nepal or Bhutan.

#c. Any person who has migrated from the following cities or countries can also take part in this examination. These are:

# Pakistan

# Myanmar

# Sri Lanka

# Kenya

# Uganda

# Tanzania

# Zambia

# Malawi

# Zaire

Ethiopia

# Vietnam

#2. Educational Qualifications

In order to take part in the UPSC examination, one must fulfil the following educational criteria’s:

#a. A certified degree from a recognized university, like a Central, State, or any Deemed University.

#b. A certified degree from any open university

#c. A certified degree from any university with distance education.

#d. A certified degree from or a qualification that is recognized by the Government of India.

#e. Any candidate that has recently cleared his/her final exam of ICAI, ICSI, as well as ICWAI can also take part in this examination.

#3. Age

In order for one to take part in the UPSC examination, one must be of the age of 21 years, i.e., the minimum age for one to take part in the UPSC examination and the maximum age limit for one to take part in this examination is 32 years.

Other than this, for the OBC, i.e., the Other Backward Classes, the maximum age limit is of 35 years of age.

For the Scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, the maximum age limit is 37 years of age.

For the Defence Services Personnel, the maximum age limit is 40 years.

For the ECOs and SSCOs, the maximum age limit is 32 years.

For the PwD candidates, the maximum age limit is 37 years.

For the Domiciles of Jammu and Kashmir, the maximum age limit is 32 years.

#4. Number of Attempts

There is a particular limit for one to take part in this examination and these are:

For the General Category candidates, they are allowed to take part in this examination 6 times, i.e., they are allowed to give 6 attempts of this examination.

For the OBC category candidates, they can give this examination 9 times.

For the SC or ST category candidates, they are allowed to give unlimited attempts until they reach the age of 37 years of age.

UPSC Post List

The UPSC job list consists of 24 services. And these 24 job lists have been divided into three main categories:

#1. All-India Services- as the name suggests, the services can be availed throughout India and they are the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS).

#a. Group A Services also called Central Services

#b. Group B services also called State Services

Toppers can choose any of the services they like, but most choose IAS or IPS.

Tips for Selecting Job

There are many things you should keep in mind while selecting a post.

#1. Understand the dynamics of the post. This means, make sure you know what will be required from you for the post and if you can work that way

#2. Understand your strengths. Each post will require a different skill from you, so understand your strength and then apply.

#3. Do not run after a higher salary. Yes, money is important, but it is not beyond and end-all. Look for other perks, too.

#4. Make sure that it is a decision based on your wish and choice and not someone else’s opinion. Yes, ask around, but do not get influenced very easily.
